Preparing Your Vehicle and Auto Body for Winter

Preparing Your Vehicle and Auto Body for Winter

Thursday, 01 October 2020 09:09

It was a hot summer in western North Carolina. Fortunately, compared to our southern and eastern neighbors, we have relatively cool summers. In 2020, the mercury climbed over 90-degrees only six times in downtown Asheville, compared to fifty 90-degree days just two hours away in Charlotte. Some of the higher elevation towns and communities in the area never see temperatures climb out of the ’80s.

The flipside, however, can occasionally be brutal. Downtown Asheville averages 9 inches of snow each winter, which is comparable to cities much farther north such as Washington D.C. and half a foot more than Charlotte. Some winters snow is rare, while others we can see almost two feet of the white stuff by the time it’s all said and done. In the higher elevations of Madison, Haywood, and Jackson counties, it could snow as much as 50 inches any given winter, with patches of snow and ice hanging around throughout the season and into early spring.

When we are not dealing with snow, ice can be a major problem in western North Carolina. While rain and drizzle dampen the valleys on a winter morning, just a few hundred feet of elevation could be lower the temperatures enough to freeze that moisture. Your driveway might be wet at the bottom and a skating rink at the top.

With the potential variations in temperature and weather throughout the area, it is vital to make sure your vehicle’s engine and body are properly maintained. Here are some tips for getting your car ready for winter.

Tips for Preparing Your Car for Winter

We are breaking this down as routine maintenance tips, auto body advice, and what you should have in your vehicle at all times:

Routine Maintenance Tips:

  1. Change your vehicle’s oil every 5,000 – 7,000 miles. Change it more often if your vehicle is older.
  2. Make sure your tires are in good condition. Have them rotated and replaced, so you can find grip when road conditions are poor.
  3. Change your vehicle’s antifreeze to help ensure engine fluids do not freeze.
  4. Make sure your brakes are working well. You will need them all winter.
  5. Have your suspension maintained so your car handles properly on wet and icy surfaces.

Auto Body Damage

Summer storms can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s body. From spring to early fall, you never know when you will run into hail or face wind-driven debris. Then you transition to fall, and your car is under assault from falling acorns and tropical systems. If that is not enough, those seasons bring tourists who take all the parking spots and make it more difficult to avoid parking lot dents and dings. You might have begun the year with a shiny clean auto body, but now it looks like it went through the same trials we did in 2020.

It is vital to have your auto body dents and dings repaired before winter. The longer you wait, the more likely they are to become expensive fixes. If creases and dings are allowed to linger, salt from road treatments could lead to rust. DentFX provides drivers in western North Carolina with paintless dent and ding repair services that can make sure your vehicle’s body is ready for winter in the Asheville area.

What You Should Have in Your Vehicle

You never know when weather will strike, and even well-maintained vehicles can experience break down. You need to carry some items with you to ensure you are safe if stranded:

  • Extra blankets and coats
  • Non-perishable food items and water
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Tire iron and other tools
  • Road flares
  • Salt or kitty litter for traction
  • A shovel
  • A good and patient attitude
